Jose Mourinho has signed a three year contract to become the new head coach of Real Madrid, marking a sensational return to the Santiago Bernabeu more than a decade after his first spell with the Spanish club.
According to BBC Sport, the Portuguese tactician will not be officially presented until after the club’s presidential election scheduled for June 7, although both parties have already reached an agreement.
The 63 year old manager departs Benfica after taking charge of the Portuguese side in September.
Mourinho guided Benfica to a third place finish in the Primeira Liga this season.
The veteran coach previously managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, winning the La Liga title, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup during his first stint at the club.
He succeeds Alvaro Arbeloa, who was appointed in January following the departure of Xabi Alonso but was unable to revive the club’s fortunes during a disappointing campaign.
Real Madrid ended the 2025/2026 season without winning a trophy, while rivals Barcelona secured the La Liga title following a 2 0 victory in El Clasico.
Los Blancos also suffered disappointment in the UEFA Champions League after losing 6 4 on aggregate to Bayern Munich in the quarter finals.
