The camp of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has responded strongly to former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Babachir Lawal, over his recent criticism of the party and its presidential primary.
The ADC campaign described Lawal’s remarks as unsubstantiated and accused him of attempting to discredit a democratic process he was unable to influence.
Lawal had earlier announced his resignation from the party on Monday, alleging that Atiku influenced the outcome of the party’s presidential primary elections conducted nationwide.
He also questioned the credibility of the exercise, insisting that the process was compromised in favour of the former vice president.
In response, Atiku’s camp, through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, dismissed the allegations and challenged Lawal to provide evidence.
“Having chosen to malign a democratic process, insult thousands of ADC members nationwide, and make grave allegations without presenting a shred of evidence, it has become necessary to set the record straight,” the statement said.
Shaibu insisted that the ADC presidential primary reflected the genuine will of party members across the country and was conducted transparently.
He added that Lawal failed to substantiate his claims of manipulation.
“The truth is straightforward. The ADC presidential primaries were conducted across thousands of wards and produced a clear and decisive outcome. What Mr Lawal has offered Nigerians is not evidence.
“He has produced no documents, no verifiable facts, no credible witnesses, and no proof whatsoever to support his sensational allegations,” the statement added.
