The Federal Government has commenced arrangements to repatriate Nigerian citizens willing to return home from South Africa following a resurgence of xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the development on Friday through a statement issued by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.

According to the ministry, the screening process for a voluntary repatriation programme began on Thursday, with authorities projecting that more than 1,000 Nigerians may take part in the exercise.

Ebienfa disclosed that while the final number of participants is yet to be determined, preliminary indications suggest that the figure will surpass 1,000.

“The total figure is not out yet. But we are expecting over 1,000 people,” he stated.

The move follows growing concerns over the safety of Nigerians residing in South Africa amid renewed incidents of xenophobic violence and anti immigrant protests.

The development also comes shortly after Ghana undertook a similar evacuation exercise, repatriating hundreds of its nationals from South Africa as tensions escalated in several communities.

South Africa, historically regarded as one of Africa’s leading economic destinations, has attracted migrants and workers from across the continent for decades. However, persistent economic challenges and an unemployment rate exceeding 30 percent have contributed to recurring outbreaks of xenophobic sentiment and violence.

Recent incidents have once again reignited debate across the continent regarding migration, regional integration and the challenges facing African citizens seeking opportunities beyond their national borders.

Officials say the repatriation programme is voluntary and is aimed at assisting Nigerians who wish to return home due to growing security concerns.

Further details regarding transportation arrangements and the timeline for the evacuation are expected to be announced by the Federal Government in the coming days.
