Mixed reactions have continued to emerge following the arraignment of Abia Central Senatorial aspirant of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Bishop Emeka Nwankpa, by the Anambra State Government over allegations of fake prophecies and miracles.

Bishop Nwankpa, an indigene of Abia State and founder of a Pentecostal church based in Onitsha, was arraigned before the Anambra High Court in Awka alongside seven other Christian clerics facing similar allegations.

The state government accused the clerics of engaging in deceptive religious practices through the performance of alleged fake miracles and prophecies.

However, the development has generated criticism from supporters and associates of the cleric, who insist the allegations are unfounded.

Reacting to the matter, Bishop Nwankpa’s media aide, Stanley Nduagu, strongly condemned the action of the Anambra State Government, maintaining that the cleric has served in ministry for more than 25 years without any record of fraudulent religious activities.

According to Nduagu, the allegations against the bishop are not supported by credible evidence.

The arraignment has also sparked concerns among some residents of Isiala Ngwa in Abia State, the cleric’s hometown, with several community members calling for his immediate release.

One of the community stakeholders, Ngozi Ahunanya, criticized the move by the Anambra State Government, alleging that the action amounts to an attack on religious freedom.

The controversy has also drawn reactions from political figures.

Francess Olisa Ogbonnaya, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) House of Assembly candidate for Arochukwu Constituency, condemned the arrest, describing it as unnecessary harassment of Christian clerics and worshippers.

She urged authorities to ensure that due process is followed and that the rights of all individuals involved are protected throughout the legal proceedings.

As of the time of filing this report, the Anambra State Government has maintained its position on the prosecution, while the case continues before the court.
