Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has urged politicians across the country to view party primary elections as democratic contests rather than battles.

Obasa made the appeal in his Democracy Day message to residents of Lagos State and Nigerians, emphasizing the need for political maturity, unity, and respect during intra party electoral processes.

The statement was issued by his Special Adviser on Research, Media, and Documentation, Adeshina Oyetayo.

According to Obasa, political actors must prioritize internal cohesion, dialogue, and mutual respect in order to strengthen democratic institutions and promote good governance.

Reflecting on the significance of June 12, Obasa described the date as a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic history and a symbol of the nation’s commitment to freedom and justice.

“Every June 12 remains a powerful reminder of the sacrifices of our heroes past and the enduring resilience of Nigerians in the defence of freedom, justice, and democratic values.

“This day commemorates the sacrifices of pro democracy heroes. Twenty seven years into our Fourth Republic, we reaffirm our unshakeable faith in democratic governance as the best path to national development and individual prosperity.

“Party primaries are contests, not wars. We must prioritise internal cohesion, dialogue, and mutual respect. Let us resolve differences through democratic means, strengthen our structures, and remain focused on delivering good governance to Nigerians.

“A united APC will not only consolidate democratic gains but also position the party to continue driving national progress and stability,” he said.

Obasa reiterated the importance of peaceful political engagement, stressing that unity within political parties remains essential for sustaining democracy and advancing national development.
