2027 Could Be My Final Presidential Bid – Obi

Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, presidential candidate Peter Obi has said he is unlikely to contest the presidency again after the 2027 general election.

Speaking during an interview with media personality Rufai Oseni, the former Anambra State governor said his decision is influenced by Nigeria’s informal zoning arrangement, which rotates the presidency between the South and the North.

Obi explained that if he does not become president in 2027, the presidency is expected to return to the North in 2031.

He recalled giving a similar response to a secondary school student who asked about his future political ambitions.

According to him, if power shifts to the North in 2031 as expected, he would be about 78 years old by the time the presidency rotates back to the South, making another presidential ambition unlikely.

Obi said he does not see himself pursuing the presidency at that age.

He, however, noted that he could only consider another bid if the presidency remains in the South after the 2027 election, although he described such a possibility as highly unlikely.

“I don’t know until after the 2027 election,” Obi said.
