The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, has confirmed that security operatives foiled an attempted theft at its 330/132kV transmission substation in Bauchi, preventing the vandalism of critical power infrastructure.
According to a statement issued by the company over the weekend, the incident occurred at about 9:34 p.m. on Friday, July 24, when security personnel on duty intercepted suspected vandals attempting to remove transmission tower components from the facility.
The statement, signed by TCN General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, said the suspects fled after spotting the security guards.
“A subsequent inspection of the area led to the recovery of 12 transmission tower angle irons, a heavy duty metal measuring scale, and a white pickup truck believed to have been used in the attempted operation,” the statement read.
TCN said the recovered items, along with the vehicle, have been handed over to the Railway Division Police Station in Bauchi for further investigation.
The company confirmed that no transmission equipment was stolen or damaged during the incident, and no injuries were recorded.
TCN commended the vigilance and swift response of its security personnel, noting that their prompt action prevented the theft of vital transmission infrastructure.
The company also urged host communities to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities around electricity installations to security agencies or the nearest TCN office to help protect the nation’s power infrastructure.
