French football legend Zinedine Zidane has revealed that he turned down several managerial offers in recent years because his priority was to become head coach of the France national team.
Speaking at his unveiling as France’s new manager, Zidane said coaching Les Bleus had always been his biggest ambition and the only role he wanted after leaving Real Madrid.
According to Sky Sports, Zidane explained that he rejected multiple opportunities from clubs while waiting for the chance to lead his country.
“Over the past four or five years, I received offers from clubs, but I declined them all in favour of the national team.
“This role is the only one I wished to pursue after my tenure at Real Madrid. I have always viewed the French national team from the perspective of a fan, but also as a prospective manager. This is why I chose not to take on a club team,” Zidane said.
The former Real Madrid manager expressed his excitement about taking charge of France and acknowledged the contribution of Didier Deschamps, who stepped down after the FIFA World Cup.
“I have reiterated this numerous times: there is nothing more significant than the France national team. Therefore, it brings me immense joy and pride to take on the role of manager for this team. It also comes with a great responsibility,” he said.
Zidane added that he was fully committed to leading France to success, describing the opportunity as a major honour in his career.
“This is what drives me. Today, I have the chance to lead this team, and I will dedicate myself fully to ensure its success. I would also like to extend my congratulations to DD for his outstanding years of service,” he added.
Zidane succeeds Deschamps, who ended his tenure as France head coach following the conclusion of the FIFA World Cup.
