The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has declared that Oyo State Governor and Allied Peoples Movement, APM, presidential candidate, Seyi Makinde, is qualified to become President of Nigeria.
Obi made the statement on Monday during the inauguration of Makinde’s presidential campaign office in Abuja.
The former Anambra State governor said he was prepared to work with any candidate who emerges winner of the 2027 presidential election through a free, fair and credible process.
“We want a Nigeria of unity, inclusion; we have a candidate who is contesting for President today, my dear brother Makinde. Is he qualified to be President? Yes, he is qualified,” Obi said.
He said his presence at the campaign office inauguration was not motivated by desperation but by the desire to promote unity and allow Nigerians to freely choose their next president.
“What we are doing today, for us is not about desperation but we want Nigerians to make their choice. All of us should come together to build a new Nigeria. We can’t continue the way we are going, our people are hungry and poor,” he said.
Obi said whoever emerges victorious through a genuinely free and credible election should receive the support of other political actors in efforts to address the country’s challenges.
“Whoever wins genuinely from a free, fair, and credible election, we will all work together to save this country from collapse,” he stated.
The NDC candidate also called for greater unity among politicians, urging them to move away from political quarrels and focus on improving the welfare of Nigerians.
“That’s why I’m here to show solidarity and assure you that we are changing the system, we don’t want politics of quarrel, politics of disagreement,” Obi said.
He added that the country needed a system where citizens, regardless of their background, could attain success through merit and opportunity.
“We want a Nigeria where the child of nobody can be somebody without knowing anybody,” he added.
