The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is set to introduce a real time tracker to monitor preparations for the 2027 general election across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, disclosed this on Monday, September 7, 2026, during the opening of a two day strategic workshop for Administrative Secretaries in Lagos.
Amupitan said the workshop would develop a standard Excel based operational tracker that would connect to INEC’s Election Monitoring and Support Centre dashboard and Election Project Plan.
According to him, the commission previously lacked a uniform mechanism for monitoring the operational responsibilities of Administrative Secretaries across the country.
He explained that the new system would provide Resident Electoral Commissioners, Supervising National Commissioners, the Secretary to the Commission and INEC headquarters with immediate updates on election preparations.
The tracker will monitor areas including the distribution of election materials, training of ad hoc staff and the overall level of preparedness in each state.
“This will enable us to move from reactive responses to proactive management,” Amupitan said.
The INEC chairman said the tracker would remain in use after the 2027 election as part of the commission’s operational and onboarding system for Administrative Secretaries.
He added that the initiative was being introduced as the National Register of Voters approaches 100 million registered voters.
The workshop is focusing on five key areas, including Continuous Voter Registration, logistics and materials management, electoral technology, optimisation of ad hoc staff and financial compliance.
Amupitan said INEC was applying lessons from recent off cycle elections, including the Osun State governorship election, where he said logistics and technology performed effectively.
He said the commission was determined to achieve similar efficiency nationwide as preparations intensify for the 2027 general election, which is about six months away.
