The Delta State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has declared an indefinite strike following the death of Unity Adedah, a deputy director in the state Ministry of Secondary Education.
The state NLC Chairman, Goodluck Oforbruku, announced the industrial action on Friday while addressing protesting civil servants at the Chike Edozien Secretariat in Asaba.
Workers had earlier shut down the state secretariat in protest over the circumstances surrounding Adedah’s death.
The deceased reportedly died after he was allegedly tied up and severely beaten by suspected thugs.
The attack was alleged to have been carried out on the orders of the Delta State Commissioner for Secondary Education, Dr Kingsley Ashibogwu.
The allegations against the commissioner have not been independently established.
The NLC’s declaration of an indefinite strike follows growing outrage among civil servants over the incident.
