Activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju has said African Democratic Congress, ADC, presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has put President Bola Tinubu, the Federal Government and the All Progressives Congress, APC, under pressure over the issue of fuel subsidy.

Adeyanju made the remarks while reacting to the Federal Government’s announcement of a 30 day fuel price discount at Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, filling stations across the country.

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, had announced the discount, which would run for 30 days.

Atiku described the initiative as a panic driven publicity stunt, arguing that the temporary measure could not repair the damage caused by the high cost of fuel.

Reacting in a post on X, Adeyanju commended Atiku for what he described as effective opposition and claimed that Tinubu’s associates, Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, presidential candidate Peter Obi and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, were the main political forces working against Atiku.

The human rights lawyer wrote: “Atiku Abubakar nice one. This is how to do real opposition. The only weapon fashioned against Atiku now are Tinubu’s men, Peter Obi and Kwankwaso.

“They are the ones that will ensure Tinubu is re-elected. Atiku has done extremely well to get Tinubu, FG and APC so scared on fuel Subsidy.”

Adeyanju also maintained that wearing a “Tinubu Must Go” T shirt was not a crime, arguing that such an expression was protected in a democratic society.

He added: “Wearing a Tinubu Must Go T-Shirt is not a crime and can never be a crime except we are now in a military state.

“We are in a democracy. Even under the military, people wore Abacha Must Go T-shirts.”
