The release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the outlawed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, or IPOB, is expected to promote peace in the South East region, according to Philip Agbese, the deputy spokesman for the House of Representatives.
He declared that he thought President Bola Tinubu’s administration would take advantage of the charges being brought on behalf of Kanu by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and other notable individuals in order to free him and start peace initiatives and reconciliation efforts in the South East.
Speaking to reporters in Abuja, the lawmaker said that some of them had gotten involved in advocating for Kanu’s release solely for the sake of peace. They also expressed satisfaction that Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who is from the conflict zone, was bringing up diplomatic concerns in order to push for Kanu’s release.
Agbese went on to say that false perceptions of the South East’s marginalization would be dispelled by Kanu’s release.
“Another wrong idea lubricating separatist groups is marginalization and I think his release would ease feelings of marginalization.”
Agbese claims that Kanu’s freedom will increase the equity, confidence, and trust that the current administration has been able to regain, especially in light of Tinubu’s demonstrated commitment to bringing the nation together, mending divides, and promoting a sense of belonging among its people.
He said: “While we are all aware of Kanu’s past actions, I believe that the current atmosphere of unity and understanding presents a chance for redemption,” he added.
“I must commend the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Ben Kalu, for his tireless efforts in promoting peace and understanding in the region. His commitment to building bridges of understanding and fostering dialogue has created an environment conducive to reconciliation and growth.
“The release of Nnamdi Kanu would be a significant step towards healing the wounds of the past and promoting national unity. We would like for the government to consider this call and work towards a peaceful resolution.
“We are aware that Kanu has also agreed to be one of the champions of the Peace In South East project initiated by the Deputy Speaker. For this reason and others, I and my colleagues are in support of his release. We trust the Deputy Speaker to champion advocacy for the region’s regeneration.”
