Revenue collection in auto parks and other areas throughout the state would be suspended indefinitely until further notice, per an order issued by Monday Okpebholo, the governor of Edo State.
Additionally, the governor gave the State Commissioner of Police instructions to jail anyone who disobeys them.
According to reports, Fred Itua, the governor’s chief press secretary, revealed this information to reporters in Benin City on Wednesday.
Itua stated that the governor would soon examine the collections-related concerns and make a decision.
He claims that the state’s revenue collection has been put on indefinite hold. Anyone caught collecting money for the state government will be taken into custody.
“The Commissioner of Police is hereby ordered to arrest anyone who flouts the order and collects any kind of revenue on behalf of the State Government.
“The Governor will soon address the issues and concerns raised. He will issue new directives soon. Until then, no one is authorized to collect revenue on behalf of the state government,” he said.
Additionally, it was stated that as early as 6:30 am, members of a number of commercial transport unions broke into bus stops along Ekenwa Road, the New Benin Market axis, Oba Market, and other locations in order to collect N1000 from commercial vehicles.
At Ekenwa, each of the four union members collects N1000 from each commercial truck.
Some of the unions, including Drivers on Wheel, Ofonee, and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), have inscriptions on their official T-shirts.
However, as a result of the development, drivers’ transit fares increased from N300 to N400 to N500.
