The Wife of the Governor of Abia State, Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti, has described children as the greatest treasure of parenthood, emphasizing that their safety, well-being, and future are non-negotiable.
Mrs. Otti made this statement yesterday at the Government House, Umuahia, during a special Christmas party organized to celebrate the children of Abia State.
She noted that Christmas is a season of joy, love, and sharing—a time to extend compassion to those around us, particularly children. “This season reminds us of the importance of creating a world where every child feels loved, cherished, and protected,” she said.
Reaffirming her commitment to the welfare of children, Mrs. Otti highlighted her ongoing efforts to enhance their growth, development, and protection. She said, “During the recently concluded 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, I reiterated my dedication to building an Abia State where the rights, dignity, and safety of every child are upheld.”
Speaking on child protection, she added: “We will not tolerate acts of violence, abuse, or exploitation of children in Abia State. Child trafficking, abuse, and molestation are heinous crimes that destroy young lives and futures. Together, we must raise awareness, enforce the law, and rid our state of such atrocities to ensure every child grows up in a safe and nurturing environment.”
Mrs. Otti also stressed the importance of education as a fundamental right for all children, regardless of their background. She appealed to parents to engage their children meaningfully, lead by example, and create homes that foster kindness, empathy, and respect.
Earlier, Dr. Maureen Aghukwa, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Ogechi Oguama, commended Mrs. Otti’s initiative to celebrate children, describing it as a demonstration of their immense value to society. Mrs. Oguama reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to advocating for the review and full domestication of the Child Rights Act in Abia State to ensure stronger protections for children.
In her remarks, the Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, Mrs. Ngozi Felix, urged parents to instill strong moral values in their children, while the Commissioner for Basic Education, Elder Goodluck Ubochi, highlighted the Governor’s prioritization of children’s development through education. “Governor Alex Otti has declared free basic education and initiated interventions to remodel schools across the state, ensuring a solid foundation for every child,” Elder Ubochi stated.
The event was a joyful celebration filled with drama, dance, games, quizzes, and the distribution of gifts by Mrs. Otti, bringing smiles to the faces of the children.
Mrs. Otti’s Christmas funfair not only spread holiday cheer but also reinforced her unwavering commitment to creating a brighter, safer, and more equitable future for every child in Abia State.
