Senate Minority Leader and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Senator Abba Moro, has revealed that discussions are underway regarding the possible return of former President Goodluck Jonathan and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to the PDP ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, the Benue South Senator confirmed that overtures have been made to both men to rejoin the party with the prospect of contesting the presidential ticket.
“In the run-up to 2027, I am aware certain individuals have been talking to Peter Obi, encouraging him to come back home. The message is that if he returns, he stands a real chance of being the candidate,” Moro said.
On the question of former President Jonathan’s possible return, Senator Moro said conversations are also ongoing, while acknowledging debates around constitutional interpretation.
“Some persons are talking to the former president to come and run, and it’s a possibility,” he noted. “There are those raising fears about constitutional limits, but there is nothing dangerous there. In 2015, when Jonathan declared to run, the matter was contested, and the courts settled that he was qualified to contest. That precedent remains valid.”
The statement underscores growing political maneuvering within the PDP as it seeks to reposition itself for the 2027 general elections, with both Obi and Jonathan viewed by some party stakeholders as potential unifying candidates capable of strengthening the party’s prospects.
