A District Court in Finland has sentenced Simon Ekpa, the self-styled Prime Minister of the “Indigenous People of Biafra Government in Exile,” to six years in prison for terrorism-related crimes.

Ekpa was arrested on November 21, 2024, by Finnish authorities following an extensive probe by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) into allegations of inciting terrorism and promoting violence through online platforms.

The Päijät-Häme District Court ruled that the charges against him were based on public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent. The offenses were said to have taken place between August 2021 and November 2024, during which Ekpa allegedly used social media to encourage violent activities that fueled unrest in Nigeria’s southeast.

Authorities further disclosed that the NBI had frozen Ekpa’s assets, along with those of his associates and related companies, as part of the ongoing crackdown on terrorist financing.

Ekpa’s conviction marks a significant development in the long-standing tensions linked to separatist activities targeting Nigeria’s southeast region.
