United States President Donald Trump has stated that the US may continue military strikes against Iran if ongoing diplomatic efforts fail to produce a resolution.
Trump made the remarks on Monday while addressing reporters on the escalating tensions between both countries.
He had earlier disclosed that he directed the Department of Defense to suspend planned airstrikes targeting Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for a five day period, creating room for possible negotiations.
The US president also indicated that he could hold a phone conversation with Iranian officials as part of efforts to ease the crisis.
However, speaking further, Trump warned that military action could resume if talks do not yield positive outcomes.
“It’s very hard for them to get out, I guess. But we’ll at some point, very, very soon, meet.
“We’ll see how that goes, and if it goes well, we’re going to end up with settling this. Otherwise we just keep bombing our little hearts the top person.
“Don’t forget, we’ve wiped out the leadership phase one, phase two, and largely phase three. But we’re dealing with a man who I believe, is the most respected leader.”
