A gubernatorial aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party in Oyo State, Olufemi Oguntoyinbo, has expressed support for plans by opposition parties to present a single presidential candidate against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.
Oguntoyinbo made his position known in a statement issued on Sunday in Ibadan, the state capital.
The development follows a meeting of prominent opposition figures held in Ibadan, where discussions focused on strategies to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress in the upcoming elections.
At the meeting, it was resolved that opposition parties would work towards presenting a unified candidate for the presidential contest.
Reacting to the decision, Oguntoyinbo described the move as a step that could strengthen Nigeria’s democracy and improve the chances of opposition parties.
He commended the leadership of the various opposition groups for what he termed a strategic and necessary decision.
“I commend the decision of the opposition leaders to field a single candidate in the 2027 presidential election, this is a wise decision and one that will lead to the victory of the opposition parties in the 2027 election.
“The summit is timely and necessary, Nigeria’s democratic future depends on the ability of opposition parties to rise above individual interests and work collectively,” he said.
