President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to embrace unity, sportsmanship, and fairness as the party commences its nationwide primary elections ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement released on May 14, 2026, the President described the commencement of the primaries as a “historic moment” for the ruling party, noting that the APC is entering its fourth election cycle since its formation.

Tinubu said the APC was founded on the principles of progressive politics, consensus democracy, sacrifice, and devotion, stressing that those ideals have sustained the party through previous electoral contests.

“The primary elections are not mere exercises to produce our standard bearers. They are a referendum on our unity, resilience, and strength as a party,” the President stated.

The primaries are scheduled to begin with contests for House of Representatives aspirants and will culminate in the presidential primaries on May 25, 2026.

Tinubu acknowledged ongoing efforts by party leaders to adopt consensus arrangements in line with the Electoral Act 2026 and the APC constitution, describing the move as commendable and capable of reducing internal disputes and fostering unity within the party.

However, he emphasized that where consensus fails, members should conduct themselves peacefully and democratically throughout the process.

“In every contest, there will be a winner and a loser. I urge the winners not to gloat in victory and the losers to show sportsmanship,” he said.

The President warned against divisive politics and urged party leaders and victorious candidates to reconcile with unsuccessful aspirants after the primaries. According to him, politics should not be treated as a “do-or-die affair” or a zero-sum game.

Tinubu also appealed to APC governors, party executives, and stakeholders to ensure fairness and provide a level playing field for all aspirants contesting for various positions.

On inclusion, the President called for greater participation of women and youths in the political process, urging party members to give them “special consideration” during the primaries.

“The inclusion of women and youth is dear to my heart. We cannot afford to relegate the two significant demographics of our population,” he noted.

The President further charged the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to remain professional and neutral throughout the exercise, limiting their roles strictly to maintaining peace and order.

Tinubu concluded by wishing all aspirants and party members success in the primaries and expressed optimism about working with the eventual candidates ahead of the general elections.
