A proposed agreement between the United States and Iran aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in the Middle East is expected to be formally signed on Friday at the Burgenstock resort in Switzerland, according to the Swiss Foreign Ministry.
Swiss authorities disclosed that the signing ceremony is scheduled for June 19 at the luxury mountain resort overlooking Lake Lucerne.
Iran and the United States announced on Sunday that both countries had reached a memorandum of understanding intended to halt the conflict that began on February 28 following coordinated US Israeli strikes on Iran, which later escalated across the region.
In a statement, the Swiss Foreign Ministry said, “At this stage, the signing is scheduled for Friday, June 19, at Burgenstock.”
The ministry explained that the venue was proposed by mediators from Pakistan and Qatar, alongside representatives from Washington and Tehran.
It added that Switzerland’s role in the process was to provide the diplomatic and logistical environment necessary for the meeting to take place on its territory.
Burgenstock, a high security resort located above Lake Lucerne in central Switzerland, was considered ideal for the talks because of its secluded location and controlled access routes.
The planned agreement follows weeks of tense negotiations and growing concerns over renewed military confrontation in the region.
A senior US official reportedly disclosed that the framework agreement had already been electronically endorsed by Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Iran’s deputy foreign minister, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who served as Tehran’s lead negotiator.
However, the contents of the agreement have not yet been made public, leaving uncertainty over the exact terms agreed by both sides.
Negotiations were reportedly complicated by disagreements surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme, economic sanctions, and strategic issues involving the Strait of Hormuz.
