The Federal Government has announced plans to replace the traditional khaki uniform of the National Youth Service Corps with locally produced Adire fabric as part of ongoing reforms to the scheme.
The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, disclosed this on Thursday during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.
According to the minister, the initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen local production and ensure government spending directly supports Nigeria’s economy.
Olawande explained that the new uniform would be produced entirely within Nigeria, noting that Adire is already widely manufactured across several states.
“It’s Adire. So, Adire is being produced in Nigeria. We have them in Ogun, we have them in Kwara, we have textile industry. Let’s put our money back into the country,” he said.
The minister noted that the transition is expected to boost indigenous industries, particularly Nigeria’s textile sector, while also promoting local craftsmanship through increased government patronage.
Beyond the uniform change, Olawande revealed that the Federal Government is also restructuring the NYSC deployment system to ensure corps members are posted based on their professional qualifications and academic backgrounds.
The reform, according to the government, is aimed at improving productivity within the service year while aligning national service with skills development and economic growth.
