Human rights activist, Aisha Yesufu, has called on opposition political parties to unite behind the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, presidential candidate, Peter Obi, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Yesufu made the call in a statement posted on her verified X handle on Wednesday, saying such a move would not require political parties to abandon their identities or platforms.
She argued that victory in the 2027 elections would depend on effective coordination rather than the size or vocal strength of party supporters, describing Obi as the candidate with the strongest record on the ballot.
According to her, President Bola Tinubu secured victory in the 2023 presidential election with 36 percent of the votes, while the combined opposition accounted for the remaining votes.
She urged opposition parties to build a united front, insisting that the numbers have always favoured the opposition but that internal divisions have weakened its chances.
“Peter Obi is not the candidate of one camp. Unifying under him is not surrender. It is strategy. And unifying does not mean dissolving your party, your platform, or your principles.
“If you are a party operative, an organiser, a fundraiser, a strategist sitting inside one of the opposition parties, we have a coordination channel for you.
“Not to replace what you are doing, but to connect it. We have to be unified by something stronger,” she wrote.
