The Management of Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU) has clarified that the suspension of Professor Nnamdi Chinwendu Nwaeze, Professor of Economics and Director of Linkages, has no connection with the ongoing industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Abia State University Branch (ASUU-ABSU).
The clarification was contained in a memo dated Friday, August 14, 2026, issued to the university’s academic community by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Gazie Okpara
The University Management, while acknowledging the social media reactions that have followed Professor Nwaeze’s suspension, said the disciplinary matter was separate from the ongoing strike action.
According to the statement, an all-professors fact-finding panel had already been constituted to examine the matter, with Management awaiting the outcome of the panel’s findings.
“Professor Nwaeze’s suspension, however, has nothing to do with the ongoing strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Abia State University (ASUU-ABSU),” the statement said.
Management also reassured members of the university community that staff would not be victimised on account of the ongoing strike.
“The University community is reassured that Management will not victimize staff on account of strike action,” the memo stated.
The University therefore appealed to members of the academic community to remain calm while awaiting the outcome of the fact-finding panel.
The clarification comes amid ongoing industrial action by ASUU-ABSU and social media discussions surrounding Professor Nwaeze’s suspension, with Management stressing that the two developments should not be linked.
