We reports that a three-story building which housed a school; Onah Nursey and Primary School at Massey Street on the last floor of the said structure collapsed around 10 am yesterday leaving many trapped in the rubble.

The rescue team which comprised of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Fire Service (LSFS), Lagos State Ambulance Service  (LASAMBUS), National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA), Federal Fire Service, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC) and the Red Cross Society.

It was an emotional scene as both the dead and living were brought out from the collapsed structure.

Ezekwesili took to her Twitter handle on Thursday morning to bare her mind on the sad event. Read her tweet below

“Just catching up on the horrific #ItaFajiBuildingCollapse. My heart breaks at how frequently our country fails our children. It feels terrible to keep condoling people for careless deaths that better governance and accountability would prevent. Our children do not deserve this.

“Two Policy issues in the #ItaFajiBuildingCollapse are: 1. Enforcing Building Codes Standards and Safety provisions. 2. Emergency Management System. The preventable death of our innocent children in that tragedy stems from Governance Failure and lack of Accountability on them.

“So even as I pray to our Lord to comfort the families of our innocent children who died in the #ItaFajiBuildingCollapse, we will all do better to avoid reoccurrence of tragedy by insisting on execution of Good Governance principles in Building Codes and in Emergency Management.,

“These 2 policy areas of Building Codes, Standards & Safety, as well as Emergency Management System, have seen all forms of simple innovations in countries at the same level as Nigeria. None of the 2 requires rocket scientists. For the sake of preserving lives, let’s get them done NOW.” she wrote.
