College of Education: Kaduna State suspends academic activities after protest, student’s death

On Friday the Management of the Kaduna State College of Education suspended academic activities in the Institution.

In a circular to the school community, signed by the Registrar, Marcus Timothy, the management said the closure was on the advice of the state government.

He said all academic activities were suspended, though staff members were expected to continue reporting to their duty posts.

“Consequent upon the aborted planned students’ demonstration last Monday, 28th June 2021, the state government has advised the Management to close the College till further notice.

“To this effect, all academic activities in the College are suspended however, all staff members are expected to report for their normal work and schedule

Recalls that students of the State College of Education Gidan Waya on Monday embarked on peaceful protests over a 100% hike in tuition in the institutions.

Following the protest, a 100 level student was killed by a stray bullet from security operatives drafted to the scene to protect lives and property, while two students who were seriously injured are still receiving medical attention at General Hospital Kafachan.

Days after the protest, security operatives arrested and detained some students who participated in the protest.
