The University of Port Harcourt, UNIPORT, chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has commenced an indefinite strike over the alleged failure to implement the Federal Government and ASUU agreement signed in December 2025.
The union also cited alleged irregularities within the institution as part of the reasons for the industrial action.
Chairman of the UNIPORT ASUU branch, Professor Omeh Obasi Ngwoke, said the union had engaged the university management several times in an effort to resolve the issues.
He said the union had remained patient while waiting for outstanding salaries to be paid in full in line with directives from the Federal Government.
According to him, the continued non payment of salaries had left the union with no option but to commence an indefinite strike.
“What we are being owed is far greater than what we receive; we just have to resolute the revolution of Congress, so we have activated indefinite local strike in the University of Port Harcourt,” he said.
Ngwoke also expressed concern over the financial hardship faced by members of the union, saying some lecturers were living in severe poverty as a result of the salary situation.
He further claimed that some members had lost their lives amid the prolonged non payment of their salaries.
The union said the strike would continue until the university management addresses its demands and complies with relevant Federal Government orders and directives.
ASUU members at UNIPORT are therefore expected to remain on strike indefinitely pending the resolution of the issues raised by the union.
