Hooliganism Forces Makinde To Proscribe Oyo NURTW

The governor of Oyo State, Engineer Oluseyi Makinde on Friday ordered the proscription of the National Union of Road Transport Worker (NURTW) in Oyo State.

The announcement was made on Friday in Ibadan in a press release, signed by the State governor, which was read by the Chief of Staff to the Oyo State government, Chief Oyebisi Ilaka.

In the release, the governor acknowledged and appreciated the support of the people, he said “while appreciating the good people Oyo State for their steadfastness overtime and support for this administration, we stand on the need to maintain peace and transquility in the state in order to engender commercial and human development.”

“After today’s deliberation with security and stakeholders meeting involving security chiefs and the governor, we have resolved to procribe the NURTW in this state untill further notice.”

The statement reads further that “all activities of the union remain illegal henceforth. We urge the people of the state to go about their lawful duties without fear of molestation as combined security task force in every community of the state have been charged to control and maintain peace and order.”

The governor also added that “Parks and garages in the state have been taken over by the Oyo State Government with immediate effect.”

Meanwhile the Police had earlier confirmed the arrest of six members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Oyo state chapter between Wednesday and Thursday in Ibadan, Oyo state for allegedly causing trouble at motor parks.

The state police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Olugbenga Fadeyi confirmed on phone that the suspects were nabbed by the divisional police stations in conjunction with SARS at Orita Challenge and at Agodi area of the city. According to Fadeyi, the arrested persons had ready been charged to court this morning (Friday).

Giving the breakdown of the arrests, Fadeyi said, “three NURTW miscreants were arrested at our Challenge division on Wednesday and the other three were nabbed on Thursday at Agodi area.

“The DPO in Agodi with the assistance from the SARS made the latest arrests possible. They, NURTW members have been warned from fomenting troubles in the state,” Fadeyi added.
