Amid the uncertainty of credible electioneering, the people of Abia North had unanimously gone to the polls in defiance of party and regional sentiment in order to achieve one aim; “Retiring bad governance”. However, it is not the availability of quality candidates that had trigged them to participate in droves in the last election rather, the enormity of disappointment arising from poor representation from the immediate past senator who represented the zone.

Sen. Mao Ohuabunwa didn’t only disappoint the teeming youths and people of Abia North with ineffective representation, he had also raised the bar in the league of failures. It became obvious that any other mortal would surpass his paltry achievements as senator. Everyone knew that except Mao himself, he had surrounded himself with unscrupulous sycophants scattered all over the three senatorial zones. Stakeholders and party stalwarts who sincerely wants the parties progress would always advice him; “Mr Senator, you can do better”. Alas, he didn’t!. He couldn’t!.

After his avoidable defeat at the polls, the senator has gone bazaar, shopping for excuses that doesn’t include himself on why he lost. Ranging from suspected party members who might have betrayed him, to Journalist, to INEC officials, and security agencies, all whom have not been spared on Ohuabunwa’s list of blames.
But in his scourge, he will live with the lessons the people of Abia North had taught him, and perhaps, learn from it. “There are no automatic tickets for failures” no matter the party, nor community.

Till date, Sen. MAO has not come to terms with the reality of his electoral demise, the last time he appeared on a televised programme, he introduced himself the “Senator representing Abia North”. Also the last time he made a public statement, he was fighting for party dominance and control. While others are talking humanity in the face of Covid-19 and measure to curb the deadly pandemic, he is talking politics. Lest we forget, when will he donate palliatives to the people of Abia North or at least, his community?.

Elections has come and gone, thus; senator MAO Ohuabunwa should desist from heating up the polity of our dear state either through himself or proxies. Since he has failed to take responsibility for the people he represents, he should stop distracting those who can still afford to do so.

For some of us who had criticised the Arochukwu born politician for his empowerment style of sharing frying pan and “bean cake” (Akara oku), now would be a time where such gestures will be appreciated wholly, in view of the current hunger arising from the Covid-19 pandemic.
