Omobayo Marvellous Godwins has been sworn in as the next deputy governor of Edo State by Governor Godwin Obaseki.

According to reports, on Monday morning the State House of Assembly impeached Philip Shaibu, and Omobayo took his position.

Following the House of Assembly’s acceptance of the impeachment panel led by Justice S. A. Omonua (rtd. ), Shaibu was removed from office.

The Edo State Chief Judge appointed the panel to look into Shaibu’s alleged wrongdoing and perjury.

On Monday, April 8, 2024, during the plenary, 18 of the 20 legislators present voted in favor of the impeachment, while only one did not.

The former deputy governor was found guilty in the report by the seven-member panel of disclosing confidential government secrets. He was found not guilty, however, of the charged perjury.

Obaseki swore in Omobayo to succeed Shaibu as soon as Omobayo was impeached.

Omobayo is a native of the same Edo North Senatorial District as the impeached deputy governor, which is Akoko-Edo Local Government Area.

Born July 19, 1986, Omobayo is said to be a “seasoned engineer with a proven track record of progressive professional experience in the oil and gas sector”.

According to his biography, he graduated from the University of Benin, or UNIBEN, with a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and an MSc in Public Administration.

He has memberships in both the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE).

He works with Dresser Wayne West Africa Limited as a Senior Maintenance Engineer, gaining experience in the South South operations.

The new deputy governor is said to be active in politics in his local government area.
