An activist, Aisha Yesufu is currently slugging it out with many critics on X over her role in the famous Bring Back Our Girls, BBOG, campaign.
Following the kidnapping of over 300 Chibok girls in Borno State, the BBOG campaign was launched.
On April 14, 2014, suspected Boko Haram fighters kidnapped the girls from their school.
According to some Nigerians, the incident was planned, funded, and intended to remove former President Goodluck Jonathan, who was a member of a minority tribe in Nigeria.
The BBOG campaign was a major factor in Jonathan’s eventual defeat to former President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2015 general election.
After it was revealed that the United States Agency for International Development, or USAID, gave over $697 million a year to terrorist groups including Boko Haram, Al-Qaeda, the Taliban, and ISIS, the issue was once again discussed online.
During a congressional hearing of the Subcommittee on Delivering on Government Efficiency on Thursday, US Congressman Scott Perry revealed the information.
Alleged theft of taxpayer cash was the main topic of the session, which was themed “The War on Waste: Stamping Out the Scourge of Improper Payments and Fraud.”
It revealed how public funds, mostly from USAID, unintentionally aided organizations that were antagonistic to US objectives.
As stated by Perry, “Your money—$697 million annually, plus the shipments of cash funds Madrasa, ISIS, Al-Quada, Boko Haram, ISIS Khorasan, Terrorists training camps—that’s what its funding.”
Following the disclosure, some X users demanded an explanation from Aisha Yesufu and asserted that USAID had sponsored and utilized BBOG to depose Jonathan.
@anthonyabakporo wrote: “I still stand that Aisha Yesufu @AishaYesufu should either apologize or tell us why she thinks she is innocent. Insulting David Hundeyin @DavidHundeyin is not addressing the “Truth.”
Another X user, @ogidi_odogwu wrote: “Aisha Yusufu what do you say about the exposé by @DOGE regarding USAID sponsoring Bokoharam and “Bring Back Our Girls campaign to unseat GEJ?”
“Aisha, I’m sorry for you.
Refusal to admit an honest mistake has destroyed your image and usefulness. Pride messed you up. Your value is now 20%,” wrote @MikelBardsdale.
However, the activist denied that USAID or any organization sponsored BBOG.
Yesufu said she is working on getting people with competence, character and capacity into leadership positions.
“Just so you know, Aisha Yesufu is currently working with like minded Nigerians who are not afraid to put in the work for Nigeria to be a great Nation.
“She is working on getting people with competence, character and capacity into leadership positions. So they can give good governance, accountability and transparency.
“Do well to do your bit, otherwise you will still be on my TL years from now blaming everyone but your inability to put in the required work necessary for Nation Building,” one of her posts on X read.
