The presidency has responded sharply to criticism from Rauf Aregbesola, with presidential aide Bayo Onanuga dismissing the African Democratic Congress as a platform of “desperate politicians.”
Onanuga, who serves as Special Adviser to Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, was reacting to Aregbesola’s remarks at the ADC National Convention where he described the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda as a “scam.”
In his response, Onanuga accused Aregbesola of echoing opposition narratives and misrepresenting the administration’s performance. He argued that the real issue lies with politicians within the African Democratic Congress, rather than the policies of the government.
He also criticized Aregbesola’s record in public office, particularly his tenure as governor of Osun State, alleging that it was marked by unpaid salaries and hardship for civil servants and pensioners.
Onanuga further pointed to Aregbesola’s time as Minister of Interior, claiming it was characterized by difficulties in obtaining Nigerian passports and security lapses, including prison breaks such as the Kuje incident.
Defending the current administration, he acknowledged that some economic reforms have had unintended consequences but maintained that measures have been introduced to ease the burden on citizens, including cash transfers and support for small businesses.
He added that key economic indicators are improving, citing growth in GDP, stronger foreign reserves, and increased investor confidence as signs of progress.
Onanuga insisted that the Renewed Hope Agenda remains a genuine reform effort and not a scam, as alleged by critics.
