The 2026 summer transfer window is officially underway, with several Nigerian football stars either securing moves to new clubs or facing crucial decisions about their futures.
The Premier League transfer window opened on Monday and will remain active until September 1, 2026, giving clubs the opportunity to strengthen their squads ahead of the 2026 to 2027 season.
Transfer activity is expected to remain intense despite the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Across Europe, other major leagues are also preparing for transfer business. Serie A will officially open on June 29, while La Liga, Ligue 1, and the Bundesliga will commence on July 1. All major European leagues will close their transfer windows on September 1.
Several Nigerian players are now at the center of transfer speculation.
Zadok Yohanna
Nigerian youngster Zadok Yohanna has completed a permanent move to Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion.
The winger joined the Seagulls from Swedish club AIK on a five year contract.
Brighton reportedly beat fellow Premier League sides Newcastle United and Chelsea to secure his signature.
Victor Osimhen
Victor Osimhen remains one of the biggest names linked with a summer move.
The Super Eagles striker has been strongly linked with a potential exit from Galatasaray despite joining the Turkish champions from Napoli on a permanent transfer last year.
After helping Galatasaray win the Turkish Super Lig title last season, the 27 year old continues to attract interest from Europe’s elite clubs, including Manchester United, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, Atlético Madrid, Juventus, and Real Madrid.
With three years remaining on his current deal, it remains unclear whether he will leave Galatasaray this summer.
Samuel Chukwueze
Samuel Chukwueze faces uncertainty over his future.
His loan spell at Fulham ended with mixed results after scoring three goals and registering four assists in all competitions.
Although his parent club, AC Milan, still has him under contract until June 2028, Fulham is yet to decide on making the move permanent.
Kelechi Iheanacho
Kelechi Iheanacho also faces uncertainty this summer.
The striker joined Celtic from Sevilla on a free transfer last year.
His current deal expires on June 30, although Celtic holds an option to extend it by another 12 months.
After helping Celtic secure the Scottish league title, former Aston Villa striker Alan McInally has urged the club to retain him.
Joe Aribo
Joe Aribo is now a free agent following his departure from Southampton after the expiration of his contract.
The 29 year old midfielder is currently evaluating his options, with former club Rangers reportedly monitoring his situation closely.
A move is expected before the transfer window closes.
Stanley Nwabali
Stanley Nwabali is another player expected to finalize a move soon.
The goalkeeper has attracted interest from Tanzanian side Azam FC, while Kaizer Chiefs and Simba SC are also reportedly in the race for his signature.
Nwabali left Chippa United in February after requesting the termination of his contract and has remained without a club since then.
Respected journalist Femi Fabunmi shared his views on the transfer market and the likely destinations of some Nigerian stars.
“Stanley Nwabali will definitely join Simba FC of Tanzania. Paperworks is being finalised at the moment, and the deal will be announced sooner than later,” Fabunmi said.
“Another sure banker is Victor Osimhen; there are great possibilities that he will be joining Real Madrid.
“There’s this thing with Jose Mourinho of liking African players as point man, and he has said he wants Osimhen.
“The only caveat is that he would play second fiddle to Mbappe, and if he doesn’t like that Chelsea is another alternative.
“Joe Aribo, who recently left Southampton, is being hunted by Rangers of Scotland.
“Wonderkid, Zadok Yohanna, signed for Brighton, and we expect some other players to also make significant moves.
“It’s still early to predict which player would move or not, but many Nigerian born players will definitely sign this summer, which you can take to the bank,” he said.
