The organisers of the Ballon d’Or have paid tribute to Argentina captain Lionel Messi following the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, describing his tournament journey as one filled with remarkable achievements.
Messi was unable to help Argentina retain the title as the defending champions were beaten 1-0 by Spain in Sunday’s final.
The 39 year old is widely expected to announce his retirement from international football, making the match potentially his final appearance at the FIFA World Cup.
In a message posted on the Ballon d’Or’s official X account, the organisers thanked the Argentine legend for his extraordinary contribution to football.
“Simply… Thank you, Leo.
“Lionel Messi has played his final World Cup match.
“It was a journey filled with records, goals and glory. Your legacy and your eight Ballon d’Or awards are eternal.”
Although Messi has not officially confirmed his retirement from international football, he would be 43 years old by the time the 2030 FIFA World Cup takes place, making another appearance at the tournament unlikely.
