Gboyega Akosile, Lagos State’s Special Advisor to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Media and Publicity, asserts that the governor is not involved in the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa, the speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Akosile denied the widely circulated rumor that Sanwo-Olu was behind Obasa’s ouster due to a purported conflict between Sanwo-Olu and the legislative branch.
In Lagos on Tuesday, Akosile clarified, adding, “No, no, no.” Absolutely nothing about that is accurate. The governor has nothing to do with it, really. It was solely a question of legislation.
“The Governor is busy with serious matters, busy with taking care of the over 20 million Lagos population.
“What happened in the Hallowed Chamber of the House of Assembly was purely the prerogative of the legislators.
“I mean, we saw on the media, just like you, that the legislators removed the Speaker. We watched like every other person. The Governor must have watched it like any other person.
“I don’t think there is anything more to it other than that. So, absolutely, there is no hand of the governor in the impeachment of the Speaker,” Akosile told the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN.
Recalls that Obasa, a sixth-term lawmaker in his third term as Speaker, was impeached by members of the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday.
The Assembly then chose and swore in Mr. Fatai Adebola, APC-Ibeji-Lekki I, as the Deputy Speaker, and Mrs. Mojisola Meranda, APC-Apapa I, to succeed Obasa.
During the session, the House also disbanded all major posts and standing committees and suspended Olalekan Onafeko, the Clerk of the Assembly, indefinitely.
