Two factions of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State have taken opposing positions over a Federal High Court judgment in Ibadan, Oyo State, which nullified the party’s National Convention held on November 15, 2025.
Both groups issued separate statements interpreting the ruling in their favour, while assuring party members that the PDP remains strong and positioned for revival ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement signed by Engr. Kalu Francis, Publicity Secretary of the faction loyal to Ambassador Abdulrahman Mohammad and Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the group praised the court for declaring the Ibadan convention invalid.
According to the faction, the judgment barred Alhaji Aminu Turaki and others who emerged from the convention from parading themselves as national officers of the party.
The statement said the ruling reaffirmed the Caretaker Committee led by Ambassador Mohammad and Senator Anyanwu as the only legally recognised National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP.
It described the judgment as a victory for due process, party supremacy, and the rule of law, adding that it validated Senator Anyanwu’s long-standing opposition to alleged constitutional breaches.
The faction urged PDP members in Ebonyi State to remain calm, united, and law-abiding as the party moves forward in line with its constitution.
However, the rival faction loyal to Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN) rejected that interpretation, insisting that the Ibadan convention held between November 15 and 16, 2025, was valid and conducted in line with the PDP constitution and electoral laws.
In a statement signed by Hon. Nwafor Richard Nwali, its Publicity Secretary, the group reaffirmed Turaki as the authentic national chairman of the party.
The faction maintained that despite internal challenges, the Ebonyi PDP remains focused on rebuilding and winning elections in 2027 under Turaki’s leadership.
It also commended the embattled National Vice Chairman (Southeast), Chief Ali Odefa, and other zonal executives for what it described as their commitment to party ideals.
“We reaffirm our commitment to resolving internal disputes peacefully in line with Supreme Court guidelines,” the statement said, urging party members to remain steadfast amid the ongoing leadership tussle.
The group concluded by expressing confidence in Kabiru Turaki’s capacity to reposition the PDP as a strong opposition party ahead of the next general elections.
