Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, is not in a position to win the 2027 presidential election.

According to the former Rivers State governor, the party is instead focused on rebuilding its structure, securing victories in subnational elections, and positioning itself for a stronger challenge in 2031.

Speaking during his monthly media chat in Abuja on Tuesday, Wike said the PDP would need more time to resolve its internal challenges before it could realistically compete for the presidency.

“I have always said that the PDP can’t win the presidential election now, all we are doing is to win some subnational seats and organize the party against 2031.

“We must be very clear to people. I don’t like people who think that because it’s just an election, you must win.

“Being a president is not to come out today and run to be president, no. We have a crisis and you can’t wake up within six months to be president of a country.”

Wike’s remarks come as political parties continue consultations and strategic planning ahead of the 2027 general election, with the PDP seeking to address internal divisions and strengthen its national structure.
