UNN still respects federal character, human rights – Vice-Chancellor

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), Prof. Benjamin Chukwuma Ozumba, yesterday, reaffirmed the commitment of his administration in upholding  the federal character, and the fundamental human rights in all its endeavours.

He said the institution is working assiduously to restore the dignity of man by giving everybody a level playing ground to participate and contribute their quotas in the activities of the institution, adding that his administration has ensured equity and open-door policies in its activities geared towards academic excellence, promotion of peace, security and conducive learning environment in the school.

The Vice-Chancellor who was represented by his deputy (administration), Prof. Charles Arizechukwu Igwe, made the statement during a courtesy visit by the Nkwere Na Isu Welfare Union, Nsukka branch, in his office.

Earlier in an address, the chairman of the union which is an association of the people of Nkwerre and Isu LGAs of the old Orlu zone in Imo State, Dr. Michael Ukonu said the union deemed it necessary to appreciate the laudable strides of this administration which has manifested in academic excellence, staff amplification, infrastructural upgrades, scholarships, professorial proliferation and international visibility.

The chairman, who is also a senior lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication in the same institution, also said that the union is poised to collaborate with the wonderful efforts of this administration to achieve the zenith of academic distinction. He maintained that in their nearly 50 years of existence, no administration has distinguished itself in promoting academic scholarship as this, prompting their solidarity visit.

“We are part of those who have reorganized the transformation in UNN; the matchless legacies you have etched in gold, we have come to be part of this historic administration that has lifted UNN from the depth of disquiet to the rapturous realm of atmospheric peace and institutional harmony…the life giving roads, the classy building, the saving grace refurbishments, the excellent partnerships, the staff upgrade, the open door, the sponsorships, scholarships, student support, environmental splendour, administrative sagacity, webometric wizardry, international visibility, professorial proliferation and indeed prompt graduation of students,” the visibly elated don said .

The chairman further added that the people of Nkwerre Na Isu Welfare Union whose membership comprises of engineers, lecturers, technicians, technologists, artists, business executives and scientists are ready to offer their professional services in various areas of administrative and academic enterprise to the university to consolidate the already existing enviable scholarly status.

Presenting the award of excellence to the Vice Chancellor, the former chairman of the union, Prof. Innocent Uzodinma Nwadike, eulogized the exemplary stewardship of this administration, urging them to keep up the good works. He added that the university has witnessed unprecedented peace and tranquility as well as academic breakthroughs since the inception of this administration.

Also, a patron of the union, Chief Kingsley Anorue, while appreciating the efforts of the administration said, if given the chance, he would want the administration to continue for another tenure.
