The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the establishment of 25 additional academic programmes in the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Rumuolumeni, Rivers State.

This followed a five-day resource verification exercise carried out by the NUC in November 2019.

A memo signed by the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Ozo-Mekuri Ndimele, and addressed to the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Communications of the State, Pastor Paulinus Nsirim, stated that the approval was given after a thorough verification exercise.

“After a pains-taking exercise that lasted five working days, the panel, comprising 35 professors from other universities, and six support staff from the NUC, recommended Full Approval for all 25 academic programmes, mainly at the Postgraduate level”, the memo stated.

The programmes are: BSc Political Science, M.Ed Educational Management, M.Ed Primary Education, MA English, MA French, MA History and Diplomatic Studies, MSc (Ed.) Business Education, MSc Biology, MSc Chemistry, MSc Economics, and MSc Mathematics.

Others are MSc Physics, MSc Sociology, PhD Biology, PhD Business Education, PhD Chemistry, PhD Economics, PhD Educational Management, PhD English, and PhD French.

There was also PhD History and Diplomatic Studies, PhD Mathematics, PhD Physics, PhD Primary Education, and PhD Sociology.

The memo, however, stated that the approval granted PhD in Mathematics is conditional, pending the recruitment of “more Senior personnel in Mathematics”, which must be communicated to the NUC.
