The production and sale of caskets in the state of Anambra has been outlawed by the government of that state.

Additionally, the government forbade the deposit of bodies in mortuaries or any other location after two months from the date of death.

This is in accordance with a statute that the Anambra State House of Assembly passed to regulate funerals and burials inside the state.

As per the recently enacted legislation, all mortuary attendants are required to notify the Ministry of Health if a corpse remains unclaimed for more than one month after it was deposited.

It stated that anyone breaking the rules would either have to pay a fine of N100,000 or serve six months in jail, or both.

Chukwuma Soludo, the governor of Anambra State, praised the Assembly for the legislation, said: “Anambra Burial Law is a very progressive law to remove the burden and pressure on the poor as well as liberate women from oppressive practices during burials.

“We celebrate “befitting living” and only a decent funeral.”

Furthermore, the recently implemented legislation issued a warning against obstructing roads and streets during funeral rites, cautioning that such actions could only be taken with authorization from the relevant local government body.
