The lawmaker representing the Lagos East Senatorial District, Senator Gbenga Ashafa, says Nigeria and Nigerians will be the loser if President Goodluck Jonathan is allowed to stay beyond May 29, 2015.The lawmaker, who stated that the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, had united Nigerians more than ever, added that the continuous stay of Jonathan would mean dwindling economy, which would cause inflation and wreck the country.

The senator spoke during a programme on Wednesday, where he was conferred with a chieftaincy title by the Arewa communities in 16 local government and local council development areas of the state.

The event came on the heels of a similar one on Tuesday, where the Ndigbo socio-cultural organisation in the district on Tuesday gave Ashafa the chieftaincy title of “Ugochinyere 1 for empowering the residents in the constituent without discrimination.”

The leader of the Igbo group, Chief Kelvin Nwaoha, had said the Igbos were happy that they also benefited from various programmes of the lawmaker.

Speaking during the Wednesday event, Ashafa said that there was no sign that the nation was safe in Jonathan’s hands.

He said, “It is the Almighty God that produced Buhari for Nigeria at this crucial time. He is the one that will rescue Nigerians from the shackles of poverty and corruption. His candidature has united Nigerians more than ever before.

“Everyone is speaking one language which is change; everybody wants the election to hold and they want their votes to count. We have never been this united in the clamour for leadership that will address corruption and other problems confronting us as a nation.”

Ashafa, who was honoured as Garukuwa (defender of the masses), said the increase in the prices of goods, which were mostly imported, showed that inflation had set into the economy.

He said, “Everything is now very expensive; a naira to a dollar, which was N160 before, is now N225. Therefore, we must save Nigeria and its economy and ensure that Nigeria remains a united entity.”

He cautioned voters not to take or eat anything brought by unknown persons on the election days to enable them take part in the counting of their votes, adding that they might doze off if they ate or drank tea brought by unknown persons.
