Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has strongly asserted that democracy no longer exists in Nigeria, citing recent political developments in Edo and Rivers States as evidence.
In a recent interview with Arise Television, Obi criticized the conduct of the governorship election in Edo State and condemned the political crisis in Rivers State, stating both events reflect the erosion of democratic principles in the country.
“There is no democracy in Nigeria today,” Obi declared.
The former Anambra State governor referenced President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, prompted by the lingering political rift between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
In a bid to contain the crisis, Tinubu reportedly suspended Governor Fubara, his Deputy, and all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for six months, subsequently appointing a Sole Administrator to oversee the affairs of the state.
Obi, however, criticized the move as unconstitutional and undemocratic.
“You cannot in any circumstances solve a problem in a democratic setting by going against rules. You can’t even solve any problem by going against the rules,” he said.
The former governor maintained that the appointment of a Sole Administrator without a democratic process undermines the will of the people and sets a dangerous precedent.
Asked about his political future and potential candidacy in the 2027 presidential election, Obi reaffirmed his commitment to championing democratic ideals and building a better Nigeria.
“We will continue to be agitating for true democracy,” he said.
“The election in Edo, does it show any sign that Nigeria is a democratic country? No. The coffin was nailed by what happened in Rivers State.”
Obi also reiterated his qualifications and leadership experience, asserting his readiness to serve the nation.
“I am committed to a better Nigeria and I have what it takes and I have the experience. Of all those who want to be President today, nobody has my background. I have what it takes, I have operated in the corporate world, and I have been a governor.”
