A Catholic cleric, Rev. Abraham Nwali, on Wednesday urged Governor Martin Elechi to pay workers of Ebonyi State their dues.Organised labour in the state has been on strike since March 10, 2015 over salary increment and non-payment of September 2011 salary by the state government.
In a paper delivered during a prayer summit organised by the Christian Association of Nigeria on Wednesday, Nwali stated that every worker ought to eat from his labour.

its workers and members, whether in the House of Assembly, civil or public service, their wages. So much is spent on conflict when justice and peace take very little.”
He called on the government and the organised labour to go back to negotiation to end the industrial disharmony in the state, saying, “Some consultations must be made and certain concessions and sacrifices may be called for on all the sides.”
Nwali kicked against the N3, 000 monthly deductions of teachers’ salaries by the umbrella body, the Nigeria Union of Teachers, which he said portrayed the government in bad light.
Meanwhile, the state government on Wednesday accepted to pay 50 per cent salary increment to the workers and the September 2011 salaries it withheld.
In a statement by Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Boniface Chima, the government said, “The labour leaders have allowed themselves to be compromised by politicians with stake in the continuation of the dispute.”
In a related development, the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Nigeria on Wednesday called on Ebonyi State citizens to put the interest of the nation over and above parochial interests of an individual or group.
In a statement by both Chairman and Secretary of the synod Public Relations Committee, Prof. Sunday Agwu, and Mr. Ama Omaha, respectively, the church pleaded with Ebonyi people and Nigerians in general, to give peace a chance and ensure that Saturday’s election was hitch free.

The church further called on security agencies to live up to their responsibilities by being on the alert to provide maximum security for both human and property.

The statement read in parts, “In the same vein, we call on the security agencies to do everything humanly possible to avoid any resort to violence and bloodshed from any quarters.

“Political office should not be sought with the blood of innocent Nigerians, rather we appeal to the Independent National Electoral Commission and all electoral officials to conduct a free, fair, credible and transparent election devoid of any form of rigging, and effort must be made to get voting materials to polling booths in good time.”
